Gabriel Medrano: 1998
Tolleson Fire Department
Gabriel Medrano, driven by a lifelong calling to serve, exemplified extraordinary courage and dedication on June 30, 1998, when he rescued a woman and her two children from the rough currents of a canal following a car accident. Approaching the scene, Medrano found a crowd paralyzed by shock and immediately sprang into action. Using a strap held by a bystander, he carefully navigated the canal’s dangerous conditions, pulling all three victims to safety. Going beyond the rescue, Medrano accompanied the family to the hospital, informed paramedics of their medical history, and even contacted the husband. His selflessness and heroism earned him the 1998 United Fire Firefighter of the Year Award, showcasing the best qualities of the fire service.
