Jayme Scammahorn: 2009
US Air Force
Technical Sergeant Scammahorn has dedicated 14 years to the fire service, excelling in firefighting, technical rescue, and hazardous materials response. As a skilled instructor, he has shared his expertise by teaching lifesaving emergency first aid to ROTC members and 300 Civil Engineers, delivering 45 fire protection classes, and actively participating in Fire Prevention Week. Selected for “Operation Southern Partner,” he contributed to fostering international relations by sharing fire safety knowledge across five Caribbean countries. Scammahorn’s leadership qualities are evident in his role as Captain and occasional Station Chief, where he managed 29 firefighters and led responses to over 100 emergencies involving aircraft, structures, and EMS.
In 2008, during a deployment to the United Arab Emirates supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom, Scammahorn displayed extraordinary bravery. While leading a convoy, his team came under fire at a checkpoint. Acting decisively, he directed his vehicle to safety and, despite lacking a weapon or body armor, advanced through an exposed area to rescue a wounded colleague. Battling intense heat and personal risk, Scammahorn provided critical care on the ground and in transit, showcasing exceptional courage and dedication to his comrades and mission.
