Jesse Simpson: 2017

Mesa Fire and Medical Department

Firefighter Jesse Simpson embodies the highest ideals of the fire service—courage, service, and a deep commitment to helping others. A U.S. Marine Corps combat veteran, Simpson witnessed firsthand the challenges fellow service members face when transitioning back to civilian life. The loss of a close friend and fellow Marine to suicide inspired him to found Calm, Fit, Complete, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting veterans in reintegrating into society while also mentoring at-risk youth.

On duty, Simpson’s dedication is equally evident. During a recent emergency call, his instinct and commitment to public service led him to go beyond standard procedures to ensure a patient received the care they needed. His selflessness, leadership, and passion for service—both in uniform and in the community—earned him the honor of being named the 2017 United Fire Firefighter of the Year for the State of Arizona.
