Julian Lucas, a native of Arizona, was born in Tempe and raised in Phoenix. Before entering the fire service, he learned the value of hard work through hands-on experience in an automobile machine shop. Approximately eight years prior to his Firefighter of the Year recognition, Julian chose a different path—one rooted in service—by joining the Phoenix Fire Department. He is married and the proud father of two young children.

Julian was selected as the 2014 United Fire Firefighter of the Year for his extraordinary actions during a working apartment fire in downtown Phoenix on March 23, 2014. Engine 44 was first on scene with a short crew and encountered heavy smoke and fire on the second floor, with flames extending toward the third. Without hesitation, Firefighter Lucas advanced a handline, fought fire on the landing, and pushed forward into extreme heat to access the apartment and begin a search..

Inside the apartment, despite suffering burns to both ears, Julian located a baby in a car seat, then continued searching and found three additional children and one adult. All five victims were in respiratory arrest when removed from the building. Through Julian’s decisive actions, calm under pressure, and coordination with arriving crews and paramedics, four of the five victims survived—an outcome that would not have been possible without his skill, training, and perseverance.

Throughout the incident, Julian demonstrated exceptional poise, professionalism, and compassion. His willingness to endure personal injury in order to continue the search embodied the very qualities the Firefighter of the Year Award is meant to honor—bravery, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to protecting others.

Julian Lucas represents the best of the Arizona fire service and remains a respected member of the Phoenix Fire Department and the Firefighter of the Year legacy.
