Firefighter Sabas Cruz-Miranda exemplifies the courage, compassion, and quick thinking at the heart of the fire service. While off duty, Cruz-Miranda noticed smoke coming from a home in a Phoenix neighborhood. Recognizing the unusual conditions and the absence of emergency responders, he acted immediately—approaching the home and risking his own safety to assist. Without the protection of firefighting gear or a team, Cruz-Miranda’s decisive actions saved a life that day. His selflessness and dedication to helping others, even when not on the job, earned him the honor of being named the 2018 United Fire Firefighter of the Year for the State of Arizona.
