Stephen Gunn: 2016
Peoria Fire-Medical Department
Firefighter/Engineer Stephen Gunn has dedicated over a decade of service to the Peoria Fire & Medical Department, following in the footsteps of his father, a retired Phoenix firefighter. Beginning his career at age 23, Gunn served five years as a firefighter before his promotion to engineer in 2011.
In April 2016, Gunn’s courage and quick decision-making were put to the ultimate test. Responding in the early morning hours to a fully involved house fire with reports of victims trapped, Gunn arrived to find intense flames, panicked bystanders, and sheriff’s officers confirming a person was still inside. Before hose lines were even deployed, Gunn made the split-second choice to enter the burning structure. Battling extreme heat—the hottest fire of his career—he located and rescued the victim, narrowly escaping with minor burns despite full protective gear.
That night, the Peoria crew demonstrated exceptional teamwork under extraordinary circumstances, with members stepping into unfamiliar roles to support the rescue. Gunn’s actions not only saved a life but also reflected the bravery, skill, and selflessness that define the fire service. His heroism earned him the honor of being named the 2016 United Fire Firefighter of the Year for the State of Arizona.
Born and raised in Arizona, Gunn has deep roots in his community. He lives in Peoria with his wife, Renee, a local teacher, and their two daughters, Braelyn and Bella.
