Paul Evancho: 2004
Yuma Fire Department
Paul Evancho of the Yuma Fire Department exemplifies the impact of training, experience, and courage in the face of crisis. With 12 years of firefighting expertise, Paul encountered a catastrophic motor vehicle accident while off duty in a remote area near Gila Bend. The collision involved six victims, multiple critical injuries, and vehicles engulfed in flames. Acting decisively, Paul triaged the victims, coordinated emergency response, and risked his own safety to extinguish a fire threatening the life of a severely injured passenger. His quick thinking and life-saving efforts resulted in the survival of one victim amidst a tragedy that claimed five lives.
Beyond his firefighting duties, Paul is deeply committed to supporting burn survivors. In 1996, he founded the Foundation for Burned Children in Southwest Arizona and serves as a liaison for families at the Maricopa Burn Center. He is a key member of the Arizona Children’s Burn Camp, dedicating over 800 volunteer hours annually to improving the lives of burn survivors and their families. Paul’s dedication, bravery, and compassion make him a shining example of the firefighter profession.
