Tyler Menke: 2011
Tucson Fire Department
Firefighter Tyler A. Menke of the Tucson Fire Department demonstrated extraordinary courage and selflessness during a tragic incident on July 28, 2010. Assigned to Engine 5, Menke arrived at the scene of a LifeNet helicopter crash engulfed in flames. Without hesitation and lacking the protection of a hoseline, he assessed the situation and entered the inferno to rescue the victims. Amidst the smoke and chaos, Menke heroically pulled Nurse Parker Summons to safety, ensuring she could receive immediate medical attention.
Menke’s bravery didn’t end there. He reentered the blaze to extricate Pilot Alexander Kelly and Paramedic Brenda French. Although French tragically passed at the scene, Menke’s swift actions allowed Kelly and Summons to be transported to the hospital, giving their families precious moments to say goodbye. His captain described the act as “the most heroic thing I have ever seen,” underscoring Menke’s dedication to saving lives even in the face of immense danger.
