Granite Mountain Hotshots & Survivor Brenan McDonough, The Town of Yarnell: 2013
Granite Mountain
The Granite Mountain Interagency Hotshots, based in Prescott, Arizona, were an elite wildland firefighting crew known for their exceptional skill, rigorous training, and unwavering commitment to protecting lives, property, and natural resources. On June 30, 2013, while battling the Yarnell Hill Fire—sparked by lightning in rugged central Arizona—the crew’s position was overrun by flames when shifting winds caused the fire to explode in size and intensity. In one of the deadliest incidents in wildland firefighting history, 19 of the 20 crew members were killed.
The loss marked the highest death toll for U.S. firefighters in a single event since September 11, 2001. The fallen were honored not only for their bravery and sacrifice but also for the brotherhood, teamwork, and service they embodied.
Brendan McDonough, the crew’s sole survivor, was serving as a lookout that day. His vigilance and radio updates provided critical information to the team before conditions became untenable. McDonough has since dedicated himself to honoring his brothers’ memories, sharing their story, and advocating for the safety and well-being of firefighters.
