Jeff Piechura: 2021
Northwest Fire District & ATGS
“A visionary fire chief whose commitment to preparedness, wildland safety, and leadership shaped the fire service for generations.”
Chief Jeff Piechura followed his childhood dream and became a firefighter in 1979, embarking on a 42-year career defined by leadership, innovation, and an unwavering commitment to firefighter safety and excellence.
In 1988, Jeff became the first Fire Chief of the newly formed Northwest Fire District, a position he held for 24 years. Under his leadership, the district grew into a model organization, and his long-held vision of creating a regional training center was realized in 2012, shortly before his retirement.
Jeff’s influence extended far beyond his home district. He served on four NFPA committees, was a Board Member of the Center for Public Safety Excellence, and made significant contributions to the International City and County Management Association. A Fellow of the Institution of Fire Engineers, Jeff was also a founder of the Arizona Fire Service Institute and a respected leader within both the Arizona Fire Chiefs Association and the Arizona Fire Districts Association.
His passion for wildland firefighting and aviation was legendary. Jeff assembled and led the Ironwood Hotshot Crew, supported wildfire operations across the Southwest, and became a highly respected Air Tactical Group Supervisor, completing hundreds of complex aerial missions. He was widely regarded as being decades ahead of his time in wildfire preparedness, air operations, and firefighter safety.
In 2005, Jeff was named Arizona Fire Service Chief Officer of the Year, and in 2015, he was inducted into the Arizona Fire Service Hall of Fame. He was known not only for his vision and discipline, but also for his humility, kindness, and dedication to mentoring others.
Jeff tragically lost his life on July 10, 2021, while serving as an Air Tactical Group Supervisor during the Cedar Basin Fire in Mohave County. He died doing the work he loved, in service to others.
Chief Piechura was a devoted family man who loved beaches, baseball, and—most of all—being a grandfather. His impact on the fire service, both in Arizona and nationally, remains profound and enduring.
